AFFORDABLE PEDIATRIC SURGICAL TRAINING MODELS AND INSTRUMENTS
A lot of pediatric surgical procedures are relatively uncommon and require a specific set of skills and structured approach. To learn these procedures it important to practice regularly.
These models give you the opportunity to practice several rare procedures in any setting, to improve your skills and structured approach. This will improve the clinical outcome of your patients, by reducing your learning curve in the clinical setting.
And the costs? Don’t worry, PediatrickBoxx models are affordable too, which includes the free training sessions on the app!

LAPAROSCOPYBOXX - PEDIATRIC
This is an adapted version of the LaparoscopyBoxx, especially designed for small children. However, you can change it back to the adult version, so you can train procedures and skills for any age. We have added special models, specifically designed for pediatric surgery, including diaphragmatic hernia repair and esophageal anastomosis. The Pediatrick laparoscopyBoxx is one of the few pediatric box trainers available and is affordable. There is no need for a laparoscope, because you can use your ipad, tablet or smartphone, for home training.
This is a validated boxtrainer, which was also compared with another take-home laparoscopy simulator and was rated significantly better. These results are presented during the EUPSA (European Pediatric Surgery Association) in Belgrade, Serbia 2019 and EAES (European Association for Endoscopic Surgeons), Valencia, Spain 2019 (link to poster and to article).

Laparoscopyboxx - Pediatric and Single Port
The Laparoscopyboxx Pediatric and Single Port was inspired by my passion for pediatric surgery. Pediatric surgery is a subtle form of surgery: it requires extra skills to be able to operate in a small space between especially vulnerable tissues. That’s why it’s so important to train. The Laparoscopyboxx Pediatric is one of the few – if not the only – pediatric box trainers on the market. This box differs from the normal version in two ways: it has two extra rubber ports that are situated close to each other and extra short legs so that the training is close to the camera. The normal-sized legs are also included.
Single port? Yes! Situated directly under the camera are two holes (without rubber): by inserting your instruments through here, you can experience the feel of a single port.

instruments
We have searched for instruments with a good price/ quality ratio, with the greatest of care. It must be noted that these instruments are for training purposes only and cannot be used on humans. The standard package contains a needle driver, two mosquito clamps, an Adson forceps, scissors and scalpel (blade 15). It is optional to purchase instruments separately in our webshop.
If you need materials to use during the practice, you can buy this as well, for which we have made packages, suited for each procedure.
Exercises
Training material is delivered standard with the Laparoscopyboxx, including a suturing pad and two ‘exercise boards’. This material has been designed on the basis of validated exercises, including exercises from the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS).
Train yourself with these challenging exercises, but you can be creative too! On the Laparoscopyboxx, there are enough hooks and holes for you to create your own exercises.
Share your unique exercises with us and who know — yours might be added to the Laparoscopyboxx App!

Yes, of course!
Where can I download the Laparoscopyboxx App?
The Laparoscopyboxx App is a web App. So, you don’t need to install anything. We do recommend that you create an account so that you can track your progress. The App can be found on www.laparoscopy.app.
I'm missing a part, what now?
Is your Laparoscopyboxx incomplete, have you lost a part or has something broken? Please let us know straight away via the above contact details.
For the exercises, standard everyday house, garden and kitchen materials are used, which can be easily purchased at a supermarket. Perhaps this might inspire you with ideas for new exercises. Let us know if you’ve thought of something new!

Exchange and return
Service comes first, so we strive to resolve all problems as colleagues. Return/refund is not a problem as long as it is within 30 days of receipt of your order.
Is the Laparoscopyboxx validated?
Not yet. Although we are currently working on this, I am personally of the opinion that we should stop with the validation of training material and begin with the actual practice of training itself. Would you like to collaborate on a study with me to validate a cardboard box? Then contact me!
Isn't virtual reality a better training method?
The development of virtual reality trainers has increased enormously in recent years. And yet, it’s still difficult to simulate tactile feedback in a realistic way. Moreover, the feel of the tissue and the behavior of a simple suture is nowhere near what it should be. Box training is, therefore, still the best training method.
How do you assemble the Laparoscopyboxx? ?

About us
Sanne Botden
I am a pediatric surgeon, but when I was still a medical intern I started a research project on laparoscopic training. For this I developed several models and received my PhD from the Technical University of Delft, the Netherlands on this research and development in April 2009. Even after being a surgical resident, I still believed that training outside the clinical setting is a very important part in obtaining good surgical skills. Especially in pediatric surgery, because most procedures are rare, but complex, which require a structured approach. However, there are not many training models available in pediatric surgery and if they are, these are very expensive. Therefore, the focus of this project is to develop low budget training models for pediatric surgery, which allows anyone to train their skills. I believe it is not enough to go to a course once in a while, but you have to keep training regularly to retain the skills and particularly the structure of the procedure.
The focus is on affordable and usable, therefore we aim for special prices for lower income countries.
Guus Bökkerink
In the first year of my surgical residency, I quickly developed a huge interest for laparoscopy. Because I wanted to improve my skills in this area, I went out in search of a box trainer. Unfortunately, they were unaffordable. I decided to build one myself. I developped the Laparoscopyboxx. A simple but qualitatively good box trainer.
During my residency I became more and more interested in pediatric surgery. I helped Sanne with the development of some of the model on this website.
